Blood Drive

This blood of mine is not red. It's burgundy, like the petal of an intense rose, obtrusive, passionate. Capillary blood is young and thin and inexperienced, straight from the heart to the skin, cut yourself and you'll bleed carmine, slash an artery and it will spurt out alizarin crimson, signalling crisis like a siren of colour. Veinous blood, however, is sluggish, old and disappointed....

The High Rise-Sandwich

Imagine, for a moment, the cross-section of a high-rise building, in Queens perhaps or in Brixton, sliced diagonally from the uppermost storey down to the basement like a club sandwich. Imagine the people inside like assorted fillings, like the....

Things to Throw From a Bridge

My stomach hurts. My legs hurt. My lungs, my tongue. Even my skin hurts. Only my heart is like a pebble at the bottom of a well where no light can touch it, dark and peaceful. Smooth and round. Cold as the water cradling it.....

So Yellow

Perhaps, if it hadn't been quite so bright, he could get it out of his mind. He could tell himself it was the washed out mustard yellow particular to the local dogs. Perhaps he'd been mistaken, perhaps it was one of the local dogs who all looked alike after generations of in-breeding. He yearned for it to be one of the local dogs...

Life as Seen in the Coffee Shop

He's aged. The last time I saw him, he was young, tall, confident, knowing that the world would obey his every command, because he had been brought up to believe that it was his for the taking, and he would, oh, how he would...

Blood Money or Quid's Second Day at Work

Shinyandnew, just ex-mint, unmarked, without history. In a paper roll along with nine of my brethren, all shinyandnewandinnocent. Split and separated, walking the walk into the leathery depth of someone's wallet. Spending a night under a pillow in exchange for a milk tooth, placed there by fragrant if unfairylike hands. Sleeping the sleep. Picked up in the morning by night-warm small fingers...

Survivor

It's knowing you shouldn't and doing it anyway, it's getting away with it until the day you don't, and then it's living the rest of your conscious thought with the regret and the self-recrimination of it because you didn't. It was the false reassurance of repetition which made it seem safe when it wasn't, and it made sense at the time to walk where you did because it wasn't supposed to happen and it was your right not to have it happen, but just because you had that right didn't mean it couldn't happen just because it shouldn't happen...

Flat

We are not normal. We flatten, you can fold us up to three times over, and slide us inside an envelope, and post us all over the world. It takes three days to get us from here to there, and we get out at the other end and wave our two-dimensional goodbyes, leaving the recipient wondering what all of that was about, that transient strange presence...

Descent

She lives at the bottom of it, past the clump of brush-weed, its hesitating fronds skimming as you go, trying to hold on to you, grabbing at your clothes, green, slippery tacks like water-fingers...

Unendangered Species

Follow me, please. Stay in line. Thank you. Please have your tickets ready. Yes, you too, Sir. All of you with green badges, follow me. Yes, Sir, that badge looks green to me. You're in my group...

The Sky Before Corinna

After we had waited for her for so long, it was almost abrupt, the way she started to swell and form the backdrop to the eaves of our trailer home, which stood out curiously sharp against her distended belly of dark cloud, tinged with a stripe of pale yellow like a warning beacon: the sun making its final feeble salute of defeat through the haze at her outer edge...

Xenophobia

I used to live next door to her and her husband Siphiwe, and often I'd look after their three children, under five all of them. Their shack was almost identical to ours, random boards hammered together like a mosaic of other people's lives, some of them still bearing advertisements for sugar and Coke and mobile phones, and the window once constituted the windshield of a Toyota...
